Why pain and suffering? Why tragedy? Why this fatal flaw that resides in our nature? Why so much sorrow as we hurt those we claim to love?
The Bible says it begins with our rejection of God. Our rejection of His existence has caused Him to pull back, to a degree, His hand of protection. There was a time when evil was kept at bay. It was not allowed to touch us, to damage and destroy us. And then we went our own way. We decided that we would be the masters of our fate and the captains of our souls -
“So God gave them over in the desires of their hearts.”
What could have been known about God was discarded and blocked out and denied. Fools exchanged truth for a lie.
“So God gave them over in the desires of their hearts.”
We chose to become sexually disoriented. We chose to step outside the boundaries and oasis of safety.
“So God gave them over in the desires of their hearts.”
We chose evil over good, greed over contentment, murder over love, lies over truth, pride over humility, ruthless over kindness.
“So God gave them over in the desires of their hearts. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
For this reason God gave us over to the vagaries of nature and the vicious desires of the soul.
