Over the years I’ve heard several atheists expound on how unfair it is that someone like Hitler or a paedophile priest “could” (that’s an important word in this context) could be forgiven. And while atheists are busy in their rants that someone who is “worse” than they are CAN be forgiven, they completely ignore the fact that they have put themselves in a position whereby they CAN’T be forgiven.
When you are filled with delusions of your own goodness, when you are filled with contempt for your Creator who says that you are in desperate need of forgiveness, when you are so full of yourself, then it’s simply impossible for your Creator to give to you what need most. It is impossible for your Creator to give to you what you have determined that you don’t need and therefore don’t want. The unbelief of atheists is a cold-hearted, determined unbelief and that simply cannot be forgiven - UNLESS they turn from their sin.
“I take no desire in the death of the wicked, so turn from your sins and live.” Ezekiel 18:32
“Where is the god who can compare with you—
wiping the slate clean of guilt,
Turning a blind eye, a deaf ear,
to the past sins of your purged and precious people?
You don't nurse your anger and don't stay angry long,
for mercy is your specialty. That's what you love most.
And compassion is on its way to us.
You'll stamp out our wrongdoing.
You'll sink our sins
to the bottom of the ocean.” Micah 7:18
“I put myself in your hands!
You're well-known as good and forgiving,
bighearted to all who ask for help.
Pay attention, God, to my prayer;
bend down and listen to my cry for help.
Every time I'm in trouble I call on you,
confident that you'll answer.” Psalm 86:5
