One of my kids is supposed to be playing a piano duet in a couple weeks. There’s a problem. My son and this other kid don’t seem to like each other very much. Because of that a power struggle broke out. While practising at our place last night they refused to agree on the tempo, with one playing significantly faster than the other. Each was playing his own part pretty well, but when placed together, well, as our six-year-old daughter said to them, “That sounds like crap!”
Isn’t that the way the much of the world sounds - like crap? Wars and rumours of war. Killing and stealing and addictions and corruption and abandoning those we’ve promised to love? All because we refuse to cooperate with Jesus who is the One who wrote the tune.
Not only do we refuse to cooperate, people praise those who live to the beat of a different drummer. Many see it as independent and noble to deliberately not cooperate with our Creator, Lord and potential Saviour. Many applaud those who deliberately reject the One who promises harmony and peace - if only we aren’t stubborn and determined to do it our way.
Well, with a little coaxing and prodding on our part, the boys agreed to try to get along. The metronome was set. One played a little slower. One played a little faster, and lo and behold, it sounded good. In two weeks, these guys are going to present a pretty sweet tune to the audience.
All it takes is a willingness to keep in time with the Master.
