There are those who accuse the men who flew planes into the Twin Towers of being “cowards.” They are wrong. So too are those who accuse North American atheists of being “cowards.”
Anyone who is willing to stand up against Christianity in the United States shows a courage that may go beyond what most Christians in the United States possess.
Of course I'm not talking courage in the sense that these same atheists would go to Saudi Arabia and openly mock Allah or Mohammed. They know what would happen, so they'd do nothing of the sort. In fact, North American atheists openly mock Christianity because they know that followers of Jesus will do nothing at all to retaliate. If they did do something to retaliate they would not be followers of Jesus.
What I mean by courageous is, North American atheists are willing to stand alone. To swim against the current. They are willing to state ideas that the majority of people think are wrong. That takes courage. I can't imagine how lonely it must have been for atheists before the recent "call to arms" has brought thousands out of the closet. The thrill of standing up to those who discriminate must make the hair on their arms stand up.
Whether North America moves toward a secular “State” remains to be seen. If it does, that is when atheists will have an ideal opportunity to see whether they really are good people. That's because it is only those in power who have a chance to do right by those at the bottom of the pecking order.
We're off to the lake so I'll be back in a week or so.
