Most people know that during His time on earth, Jesus identified with the outcasts of society. Not everyone knows that this pattern began long before He came to earth. If one looks through His family line as recorded in Matthew we find the following individuals:
Tamar - a Canaanite woman who posed as a prostitute to seduce her father-in-law in order to bear a child.
Rahab - a female prostitute (the spies sent to check out Jericho went straight to the brothel)
Ruth - a Moabite woman - infamous for their purposed seduction of Israelite men.
Bathsheba - the wife of King David who conceived a child with him while still married to another man.
Mary - the mother of Jesus who carried the disgrace of being pregnant while not married.
To have women included in Hebrew genealogies is very unusual. To have women who presented lives desperately in need of love and healing - more astounding still. The lesson here is that God’s grace can and does fall on anyone of His choosing.
