Atheists and Cultural Christianity

What do you think atheist Richard Dawkins means when he calls himself a “cultural Christian”?

I think he understands that the moral code of behaviour that we in the West try to adhere to, is drawn directly from Christianity. It's why the United States has been called a Christian country. Not because its founders were Christians, but because the founders knew that Jesus' and the New Testament author's directions for moral conduct were the best guidelines upon which to build a society.

Because Dawkins tries to adhere to most of the Christian code of behaviours, he self-identifies as a cultural Christian.

Yes?

This is important for those who accuse atheists as being “without morals.” It's true that atheists reject the reality of objective moral duties and obligations. However since they began their quest for a “rational” moral code by which to live, they've come full circle and adopted, by and large, the Christian moral code anyway. Of course atheists adapt this code to suit their likes and dislikes, but so do many who call themselves Christians.

I am pretty sure that it's the same thing as me: he follows holidays and special events, such as Christmas, Baptisms and Marriage and attend church when appropriate for these things.

    Nothing to do with morality...

  2. Btw, I think you are right for the morality part; we all adapt our views depending on our we feel, what seems right to us and others, etc...
