Only when we’ve reached the absolute end of ourselves, through illness or death or divorce or incarceration or things like that, only when those predestined to receive the gift of salvation have reached the end of themselves, only then is the existence of God received.

Like those who, finally having a heart attack, begin to watch what they eat, coming to the end of ourselves makes us spiritually teachable.

In the absence of submission to a higher authority, acceptance of God’s existence is not possible.
